Every human being values its independence, but Armenians love it more. Because, independence day of Armenia is a very important holiday for every residence of Armenia and for the whole Armenian nation.

When is celebrated the Independence Day of Armenia?

Every year, on September 21, no matter the weather, Armenians from all over the world, no matter the place the location, celebrate the most important state holiday of the country – the Independence day of Armenia. September 21 is a non-working day in the country. On this day nobody works, everybody celebrates the most important holiday of the country.

In 2019, the 28th anniversary of being an independent country is going to be celebrated.

History and traditions of the holiday

Supreme Soviet of Russia signed a declaration about the independence of Armenia on August 23, 1990. It was mentioned in the declaration that Soviet Union disorganizes and forms a new republic. During the referendum about the independence, Armenians (95,5% of the residents) voted for leaving Soviet Union on September 21, 1991. After 2 days, on September 23, 1991, Supreme Soviet of Armenia proclaimed Armenia an independent country. On the other side, the Republic of Armenia was proclaimed independent only after the dissolution of Soviet Union. In 1991, Armenia, being an independent republic entered CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) and in 2001 Armenia became a member of European Union. The declaration about the independence of Armenian is a constitutive document of the Republic of Armenia and one of two fundamental documents along with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

After the Supreme Soviet of Russia proclaimed Armenia an independent country, dozens of countries (more than 47) proclaimed the independence of Armenia.

Many events are organized every year on September 21 in Yerevan and in other cities of Armenia. A military parade is organized in the Republic Square in Yerevan once in 5 years, the president and the prime minister of the country attend it, too.

On that day, every Armenian visits the memorials of their relatives, in order to commemorate, without which the holiday wouldn’t have a meaning.

On that day dozens of bouquets are put on the memorials and the candles are lighted up.

The Government of the Republic of Armenia visits the military cemetery Yerablur – a memorial for the victims of the Nagorno-Karabakh War.

The main event of the holiday is celebrated in the capital of Armenia- Yerevan, in the Republic Square – the central square of the capital, where open air concerts of Armenian singers are organized. Armenian films are showed in the cinemas of the country, and exhibitions of Armenian painters are organized in the galleries. On that day the Government of Russia awards people who did something significant in their sphere (science, culture and so on).

Every year, on September 21, in the spiritual center of Armenia – Etchmiadzin, a worship prayer is organized.

On the day of Independece, not only in Yerevan, but also in different regions of Armenia many festivals are organized, where you can taste Armenian dishes.

Armenian nation is a generation, which deserves to live in an independent country, a generation, which is well aware of its traditions and which boldly walks to a bright future.

The new government decided that in 2019 the epicenter of state holidays is going to be Gyumri – the cultural capital of the Republic of Armenia.
