Wedding – one of the most important and happy events for almost all the nations of the world. Armenians celebrate weddings in a luxurious way. Tamzara – ethnic Armenian wedding ceremony, bright and colorful festival of songs, dances, traditional rites and eloquent toasts. The History of Armenian Wedding Traditions
According to old traditional customs of Armenian weddings, men and women were sitting separately and the bride couldn’t come to wedding tables; there was a separate room for her.
From ethnic wedding rituals that have been transferred to our days, it is the meeting of the bride with her husband’s mother at the doorstep of husband’s house. During the meeting Armenian bread lavash is put on the shoulders of newlyweds and then they eat honey.
Another ethnic rite – sacrifice of an ox, which is a rare animal nowadays. This rite is a very rare thing in Armenia now; you can find it only in several villages.
In village regions, when inviting guests to the wedding, people were sending them an apple or wine. Special invitation cards were discovered in cities only in the end of 19th century.

The guests should come to the wedding place on the same time. On the court, you can listen to Armenian ethnic music. Kavor (‘’Godfather’’ in English) meets the guests, dressed in ethnic clothes. Performers of ethnos are the husband and his relatives. During the ceremony, people drink aperitif (homemade mulberry vodka or grape wine). After that the host invites women to a room where the bride should dress. The ceremony of dressing is accompanied by songs and jokes. When the bride is ready, the husband is invited to her room and after that the couple accompanied by their relatives goes to the celebration hall.
At the entrance, the mother of the husband meets the newlyweds and here starts the ceremony of entering the husband’s house, which is also accompanied by Armenian ethnic music. After entering the husband’s house, newlyweds break a jug for luck. Then the main wedding celebration starts with traditional Armenian toasts, songs and dances. The wedding ceremony ends with bride’s dance. The bride gives wedding souvenirs to guests.
