Lake Sevan and Sevanavank Monastery in Armenia
Lake Sevan is a favorite tourist destination.
Altitude above sea level and the area of its mirror, is one of the largest high-mountain lakes in the world. From a bird’s eye view, you can see that Lake Sevan has the shape of a giant eight - large and small Sevan. Located at an altitude of 1916 meters above sea level. The area of Lake Sevan is 1240 square meters, the maximum depth reaches 80 meters. Sevanavank was built on the peninsula of Lake Sevan.
According to surviving data, the first church St. Harutyun (Resurrection) was built by Gregory the Illuminator at the place where the pagan temple used to be. The church was destroyed by the earthquake of 995. In the second half of the eighth century, monks appeared on the island who built a monastery here. The churches of St. Astvatsatsin (St. Holy Virgin) and St. Arakelots (St. Apostles) were built in 874. The churches have been built by the decree of Miriam, the daughter of the king Ashot the First.
At the end of the 9th century, the battle of King Ashot the First against the Arabs took place on the territory of the monastery. In the 16-17 centuries, the monastery was destroyed. In the medieval Armenia, Sevanavank was a significant historical and architectural complex. Today, the monastery is active, and at Sevanavank operates a Theological Seminary after Vazgen I.
The main inhabitant of Lake Sevan, which you definitely need to try, is the Sevan trout.
