Many people compare Dilijan with heaven on earth - because of the harmony and pacification of the magical nature present here and the ability to know oneself. Almost the best place of the Dilijan Reserve is the gorge of Hagartsin.
Haghartsin is an attraction not only in the city of Dilijan, but also throughout Armenia. The monastery complex was built in the 11-13 centuries. It consists of the Church of the Holy Virgin (X century), the Church of St. Stepanos, a chapel, as well as the refectory and tomb of the royal Bagratuni dynasty. The monastery complex lived a turbulent life from the 13-16 century.
The magnificent landscape of green forests and mountains only enhances the beauty of the monastic complex.
The most ancient building of the monastery complex Haghartsin is the church of St. Gregory the Illuminator. The refectory, a rare example of architectural art, was built by the architect Minas in 1248. Elements of cross-dome architecture are characteristic for the Church of Astvatsatsin. In the 13th century, Haghartsin Monastery is a major center of the spiritual and cultural life of Armenia.
The main treasure of Haghartsin is the beauty of stone buildings and the surrounding nature of the Dilijan Reserve.
In 2006, in the framework of the official visit to Armenia, the monastery was visited by Sheikh Al Qasimi, the emir of the emirate of Sharjah. On the edge of the gorge is the famous walnut tree. According to local residents, it has been standing here for more than 1000 years. There is a belief that if you make a wish and crawl through a small hole in the trunk of the tree, the desire will come true.
